4 ways Chicago Fire could write Sylvie Brett out of the show

What a year Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) has had. She went from being childless and single, to adopting a baby and getting proposed to by her ex, Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer), in the season 11 finale of Chicago Fire. She was the character most poised to have a crucial season 12, based on these huge developments, but Variety has revealed that the character will actually be leaving in 2024.

Brett will be in the season premiere, of course, but the character will exit at some point during the season, meaning we will have to savor the remaining episodes with her that we have. Since Brett’s exit is undoubtedly on the minds of One Chicago fans, we decided to theorize some different ways in which she could be written off.

Brett moves to Oregon to live with her fiance Casey

The most likely option. Casey has already set up a career and life in Oregon with the Darden boys, so it would makes sense for Brett and her baby to make the move to the Beaver State and create one big, happy family. It would not only make sense for Brett to no longer appear in the show, but it would uphold the reason why Casey left the 51 in season 10.

This is assuming, of course, that Brett says yes to Casey’s proposal, and the two of them agree to get married at some point down the line. We suppose that Brett could move in with Casey even if she doesn’t say yes (maybe she needs more time?), but that definitely takes some of the “happily” out of the “happily ever after.”

Brett and Casey leave Chicago together for somewhere new

This theory is prompted by an interview Jesse Spencer gave to Deadline. He reflected on Casey’s return to Chicago, and proposed the idea that the character’s time in Oregon may be coming to a close, and that it might be time for another change.

“He’s in Oregon, of course, but it feels like his time there is coming to an end”, the actor stated. “The Darden boys are getting older, doing really well, and are moving on. It feels like he’s there to sniff around Chicago and his old flame and maybe rekindle that fire.” If we are to take Spencer at his word, then we could see a scenario in which Brett and Casey decide to start the next stage of their lives in a different city altogether.

Brett turns down Casey’s proposal and quits her job at the 51

A sad but worthwhile option to discuss. Brett spent a lot of time focusing on self-improvement in season 11, and the conclusion she ultimately arrived at was that she didn’t need anyone to fulfill her life. “We’ve always seen her in a romance. She’s a hopeless romantic, but I think it’s important to see her come into her own and focus on her own things”, Killmer told NBC Insider. “Friendships and her career, not just her love life. I’m really excited about being able to explore all of that.”

If Brett decides that she isn’t ready to get engaged, or that her feelings toward Casey aren’t what they used to be, then we could see an instance in which she leaves the 51 to start fresh in another city or firehouse. It would be tough to carry on in the place where you met the person you turned down. We’re pretty confident the Chicago Fire writers won’t go in this direction, and we’re glad.

Brett decides to change careers after becoming a mom

Brett’s decision to adopt a baby was game-changer. The character was raised by adopted parents, which greatly informed her view of the world, and how she’s paying it forward by giving another little girl a good home. It was a beautiful storytelling decision on the part of the writers, and one that casts Brett’s dangerous profession in a different light.

Even if Brett were to stay in Chicago to raise her daughter, she would have to take stock of the fact that being a paramedic puts her in harm’s way on a regular basis, and that maybe a different line of work would be better suited for her at this point in her life. There’s a precedent for staying in town despite leaving the show, as evidenced by the recently married Chicago Med couple April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and Ethan Choi (Brian Tee).
